Physician Spotlight
Since childhood, Dr. Hwang wanted to be a doctor. It was a dream his parents strongly encouraged. Dr. Hwang’s parents emigrated from Taiwan so that his father could pursue a Master’s in Mineral Engineering at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and a Ph.D. at Penn State. Dr. Hwang was born in Arizona and shortly thereafter moved to Lakeland, FL, where he grew up. “My parents were a great influence and taught me the importance of hard work, and of being humble and kind,” Dr. Hwang said. His father, an engineer and his mother, a business owner, were a source of motivation for both Dr. Hwang and his brother, an anesthesiologist at Georgetown University. “Being able to see our parents achieve the ‘American Dream’ was inspiring and their support certainly led to the pursuit of our medical careers.”
